As discussed in earlier threads, I recently bid on the ACCGS slabbed CO chip which finished on ebay at $22.50. I was not successful. Before anyone asks the inevitable questions, this is what we are up to
We've debated many times whether many of the slabs we see are in fact 'sealed capsules' and whether it would be possible to open/reseal/remove or replace the item undamaged etc. I and others have tried asking questions of the sellers before with no helpful response.
Between 3 slabfree members including myself, we decided to try and buy 2 slabbed coins (as they would be cheaper than chips) from each of the slabbers we know to have slabbed chips or offered a chip slabbing service. Before doing this I looked carefully at many scans to ensure that the capsule type was the same for chips or coins, and that the capsules varied from company to company. In total there are 8 slabbing companies involved, one of which has two different capsule types.
The reason for purchasing 2 of each is that I would like to display our findings at the convention. Ive discussed this with Mr Skelton who is going to talk to the other BOD's at next weeks meeting. One of each slab might be damaged beyond recognition in attempting to remove the coin and I would want to show a 'new' example alongside.
Over the past 36 hours I bought a number of slabbed coins on ebay. Basically, the cheapest slabbed coins I could locate. I have managed to get two of each as required.
When the 'tests have been performed' I will report back and the results will go on the slabfree site. By that time I should also have an answer from Mike. I will take various scans, photos and even video to show.
BTW, NO slabfree club funds have been used on this project.
Feel free to ask whatever you want, Im sure all 3 of us wont have a problem responding.
