Charles,
The sports chips started with the NFL poker chips that came out 5 or so years ago.
After Boston won the World Series in 2004, Topps created 4 sets of poker chips to commemorate the 2 teams that made it to the championship series' in each league. There was a 25 chip set made for the New York Yankees, Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals. There was a 26 chip set made for the Boston Red Sox. The extra chip in this set commemorated their World Series win. Last February, Topps created a new product called "Pack Wars". This was supposed to be a roll playing game with baseball cards. It never really caught on with collectors. Attached to the top of every box of booster packs for these "Pack Wars" cards was a baseball poker chip in its own pack. There were 25 different players pictured on these chips. Each player poker chip came in 4 different colors and were serialized. There were 125 green chips, 25 blue chips, 10 red chips and 1 black chip made for each player.
Below is a scan of both sides of the Ichiro Suzuki red chip. I collect these chips because I collect any chips related to baseball. I think I am missing about 15 chips from having a complete set of green, blue and red chips. I only have 1 black chip right now. If you have any of these for sale/trade, please let me know.
Happy Chipping,
