I thought I was upgrading (and saving space). I bought a, just introduced, HP 3210 all-in-one scanner, printer, copier. Scans suck. My Scanjet was much better. Brown chip is from my all-in-one unit.

Rich, the scanner mechanism used in Scanjet and All-in-one machines differ quite significantly. Since Scanjet machines are for the exclusive use of scanning, they offer high precision scan quality than an All-in-one. HP all-in-one machines being multi purpose devices support different features such as printing, scanning, copying etc.
If you wish high precision scanning, I would recommend you to use a Scanjet for this purpose. You can use your Photosmart 3210 unit for printing, copying etc.
I just ordered their newest Scanjet (there goes the space savings).
