She still has to live a complete 100 years to be a century old (although she is IN her 100th year after she turns 99 --- by which time we'll all be distant memories, of course! -- she won't BE 100 until after 100 years have passed).

AND she won't be 1000 until after 1000 have PASSED.
AND she won't be 2000 until after 2000 have PASSED. At which time, she can start her 3rd Millennium of Life, God & Nanotechnology willing.

After she turns 1999, she will be IN her 2000th year, but she won't BE 2000 until it ENDS. Similarly, the Christian era (A.D.) won't be 2000 years old until AFTER the year 2000 ENDS --- ENDS --- ENDS.

This is simple math, nothing mystical. Some people, well-meaning but misguided, have been hyped by money-grubbing commercial interests, stupid media personalities and, heaven forfend, some naive educators, into buying the erroneous concept that the new millennium starts this year. IT DOES NOT.

Gene's list could include everyone on Earth except me, Larry, John & Kerry and I still wouldn't buy it. A falsehood does not become truth through simple repetition (isn't this what Orwell called the "Big Lie" or something like that).
