An EZ rule of thumb is that your image will display full size online at 100dpi. If you scan at 300dpi, it will appear 3x normal size. I scan at 300 dpi and reduce the physical immage size to 1/3 of how I want it to appear. eg If I want it to be 4.8", I scan at 300 dpi and reduce the image to 1.6".
