If you attempt to cash in $3000 or more at any Las Vegas casino, they will check to see if you had been playing enough or at a level high enough to have actually won (or lost) that much value in chips. Some of the smaller casinos the cash value would likely be lower to trigger scrutiny. I cashed in 4 $1000 jetons at the Paris a few years back and they made sure that I could have won them. They'll ask you for your player's card, and usually ask you if you have any markers the chips should be applied against. These actions aren't so much for tax purposes (you won't be given a W2G just for cashing in chips), but to prevent money laundering. Casino laws are even stricter than banking laws in this area. They're also interested in the possibility that the chips may have been improperly removed from the tables.
