After I passed through the American Graffiti chapter of my life, I was in the background at Animal House followed by Alice’s Restaurant. A bunch of other stuff happened and I found myself after a few years providing reliable transportation for a bunch of starving artist friends and acting as a touchstone to the “square” world for them. A habit they had which I adopted was a keen study of people about them. The actors and actresses, dancers and musicians would try to divine what various folks were feeling, experiencing or trying to convey through observation and use that information in their craft. No mystery to me when Hollywood types start kicking poker pros around at the Hold ‘Em tables. How’re you going to bluff someone who’s always acting anyway, Tex?
Let’s consider what we might see in these pictures. First one has Worried Sister in some sort of earnest huddle with Other Sister. What could that conversation be about? Someone gambling away the gas money? Jeez, gasoline was going for about 12¢ a gallon in those days. Food money, rent…wonder if you could lose more than one nickel at a time in a slot machine at that time? Other Sister seems nonplussed by the whole affair. Please add on if you’ve got a script for this little episode.
Next picture has Other Sister with the look I have on my face when I’m in Las Vegas. I just tell whoever I’m with, “I’ll meet you back at the car in three days.” turn, and head for green felt with that same exact expression! Perhaps Worried Sister in the background heading for the door, is looking for a mailbox to mail off that postcard Other Sister was holding. Perhaps Worried is also going across the street to the Birdcage (did you notice?) to try her luck at Keno. Heard they had a pretty hot game over there for a little bit.
Didn’t really think at first that Worried Sister would be much of a casino denizen but after looking at the rest of the postcards I’d won I found more to the story to consider.
