Archie,
Talk about screwing up big time. When I first got my cable modem, I was very new to networking, as was my cable service provider. While attempting to network my desktop with my laptop I opened up my desktop's hard drive for sharing over a network. A few days later my cable provider (who is a friend of mine thank God!), called to say that I should be aware that for the last few days I had provided full access to my C: drive to anyone on the internet who could find it! Realizing that the problem was partly his fault too, he installed firewall software at his end, but suggested I do the same here.
For those that are interested in knowing just how secure their computer is while they are online, I suggest they go to:
and use his free service called ShieldsUp! It will tell you just how secure your computer is and identify any weak spots. It is well worth the few minutes it takes.
