Hang in there David, I know how you feel. Two years ago I had to put my 10 yr old female boxer, Wheezer, to sleep. I held her in my arms as the vet gave her the lethal shot, and felt her go. I started crying uncontrollably. As a 35 year old man, I was a bit embarassed, and apologized to the vet who was still in the room. Told him that I didn't cry this much when my grandmother passed away, and just couldn't stop. He told me that it was perfectly understandable and asked me if my grandmother met me each time I came home and was as excited as Wheezer was every time she saw me. Once that sunk in, I didn't seem to be embarassed and figured Wheezer was worth all the tears I cried.
Only a dog lover can know the pain you feel, and I truly wish for you to overcome the pain, and start to remember all the good times. When the time comes, open your heart and rescue another friend...there are many out there that need our help.
BTW, Wheezer is the one standing over her younger brother Sparky.
