It is a good question. I have often thought about the question.
To me the chip is worth next to nothing if (1) it can be ID'd, (2) it was for a home game; that is, not an illegal club game or BPOE (Elks Club) game, (3) wasn't used by a famous person, and (4) is not particularly beautiful or interesting; that is, not a crest and seal chip, not an inlay chip, not an unusual hot-stamp design, etc.
Just because the hot-stamped, hub-mold chip can be ID'd, that alone does not mean much to me. A simple monogram, hot-stamped, home-use chip, to me, is hardly worth the trouble.
