I play poker because it is fun, and I am a competitive person. Having frieds and playing semi-serious poker are not mutually exclusive, you can do both. The guys that I have my home game with are not very competitive and the buy in is minute (who wants to clean their buddies out?). Don't get me wrong, I love playing with those guys and wouldn't dream of ending our regular game, but I can only take so much Acey Duecey. I go to a casino because the level of competition is much higher even at the little 3/6 to 6/12 games that I play in. And if there is no competition, GREAT! I make more money. Would you rather take your friends money or a strangers?
As far a Video poker vs. live poker goes you are comparing apples to oranges. It is like comparing Carribean Stud to Pai Gow, they are loosly based on the same game but you ain't gonna get much for your low hand in Carribean Stud.
You are right, the rake sucks but the house has to make their money one way or another right? You are in a casino after all..... They never lose.
I believe live poker is the way poker was meant to be played. I enjoy online poker (especially with the folks from this board) but, it escapes me why one would choose to sit in their hotel room and play online rather than go downstairs and play the game for real. I believe that in a ring game you are less likely to be cheated as collusion is a serious threat to the online player, and you get to meet real people that share a similar intrest.... Not to mention you get to handle the cards and CHIPS! The drinks and other great things about the atmosphere are just an added bonus.
Well that is why I play, anyway.
