I have been doing some Metal Detecting and came across a few interesting finds in the last several weeks, and especially, the last couple days. Up until yesterday, the oldest coins that I had found were a couple of 1950s dated pennies. 1950 and 59.
Then, yesterday I found a Buffalo Nickle in a play lot near me. No date on it and badly worn. Today, I found a couple Wheat Pennies, 1944 and 1946. Worn and a little corroded but not bad for their age and the time that they have probably been in the ground.
That brings me to the purpose of this post. Tonight I found a 1983 French coin, 5 Centimes. I was trying to figure about it's place on the hierarchy of coinage. My research indicates that it was 1/100th of a Franc but what was a Franc comparable to. As I have searched that, of course, I run into the fact that French Francs are no longer exchanged and the Euro is the monetary unit. I can't seem to find the approximate value of a Franc. Other than, officially, it would be valueless.
I am posting this here as I know there are some who are into Coins and Currency. I was hoping someone could give me some history.
Thanks for your help,
