Dennis Brooker gave me a tip that might help. Dennis suggested that you put the chip in a white cardboard cutout, such as a 2x2 flip. Evidently, the Canon LiDE scanner is designed to scan flat objects. With the holed white cardboard on the same plane as the surface of the chip, you'll achieve a white background. If the white background is above the plane of the chip, it will be dark purple.
It's only a quick-fix and is not the way a scanner should operate in this layman's opinion.
I know that software such as photoshop or Picture It will allow images to be scanned and cropped to get rid of the purple background ... but the purple background should not be there to begin with.
