In some societies, birth is the date of the 1st birthday.
It was not until the 7th Century or later that "0" was accepted as a number. Indeed, "0" was considered to be the work of the Devil by some Christians. So the first day after Jesus's birth had to be day 1, year 1.

At least that's how I see it.
