And I am the dummy that packs up a full rollaround suitcase for any shows I go to. I think it has more to do with recordkeeping than anything. I am just not interested in keeping track of a bunch of trades already completed. Again, for some, that may not be a problem. But the last small trade session I was at (maybe 15 attendees) I picked up over 100 chips. Keeping track of that many trades would be a major pain.
As far as honesty I can only say that in 12 years of collecting these things I have only been "stolen" from once. And it was not a true theft, more of a blackmail situation. I got out of a large trade at about a $200 loss simply to avoid a messy situation with a non club member. Why did I do it? Simply because I was VP of the club at the time and didn't need the potential bad publicity. I ended up paying about twice what the chips were worth but no big deal. BTW - I have not heard a word from that collector ever since and I don't think he collects chips any more.
Simply put - not everyone is going to be honest but these club members are as close to an honest group as you will find anywhere. I would give them a second chance.
