Tonight’s selection comes from a country I don’t think I have ever posted. It comes from Saddam Hussein’s neighbor to the north, Syria. The note is a 1978 /1398 issue 10 pound note. The front has a dancing woman in front of the Al-Azem Palace in Damascus. On the back is a water treatment plant. This note has a collector value of about $3.50 UNC. The currency has undergone some changes and I am not sure if these are still traded. You may be wondering about the two date references, I have included an explanation below the notes about the Hijera Date. ENJOY!
HEJIRA (Hijra, Hegira), the name of the Muslim era (A.H. = Anno Heqirae) dates back to the Christian year 622 when Mohammed 'fled' from Mecca, escaping to Medina to avoid persecution from the Koreish tribesmen. Based on a lunar year the Muslim year is 11 days shorter.
