Larry, Math is very basic. In order to count to progress to 1 we must start at "0" and not 1. In order to fill a measuring cup with water you must start with an empty (0) cup. Look at your ruler and notice how far you need to look to the right to reach and complete one unit of measure. Not to shoot holes in your examples, but you suggest 1 "through" 10, but exercise 1 "to" 10. <g> If I asked you to empty your pocket of everything and handed you a stack of chips instructing you to put one-at-a-time into your pocket just up "to" but not exceeding 11, you will find after emptying your pocket of all chips there will be 10-chips. Your example of the first "completed" millennium was 1000. Note the "0" and realize you must go to the next full 365-days to start with the next Millennim at 1001 -- or in our case: 2001.
It's been like this from year-0. We did not reach year-1 without going through all the number of days which progress to year-1. <g>
