IMO it is caused by the venom of a particular snake. Snakes are good at camoflauge to loll people into a false sense of security but the fact is they are still Snakes.

Sometimes it itches so much it is impossible not to scratch. However, scratching nearly always results in rabid infection. The only cure is to shoot the snake. If I found one in my yard I would have no hesitation.
