I have been in the middle of a few of those scary fires and explosions. You are so damn scared you go on autopilot and do what ya' gotta' do. The worst times are when the fire is howling so bad you can't hear your self think and the hair all over you is standing stiff as you are looking for survivors and counting your men before it is anywhere near 'under control'. Been there done that.... don't want no more either. (Worked my way up from an unit operator to Light Fuels Division Production Supervisor).
Check one of our 'Bar-B-Que" days.. 2 men died in this one, nothing ever found of either one. It was a really hot one. Pilots landing at Hobby airport 86 miles away saw the fireball rolling. The fire is at 1200 feet in this picture, HEAT could be felt 2 miles away.
