Sounds very high - how heavy is it? Try and look at the Royal Mail website to check the rates.
There is a link on the front page for postal prices - just use the dropdown menu for airmail and hit go. I checked and small packet rate for 2kg is only £18.52 or approx $36, so unless it is very heavy, $50 seems high to me. If it is heavy, maybe consider surface mail - slow but cheaper!
If the seller refuses to reduce the costs if they are over the top, I'm happy to have it sent to me in the UK and then mail it on to you - just for cost of course! If you do need my help just drop me an email
