Dave, 649000 bytes is a huge file for a picture of a chip! If you can tell us what format the scan is (.jpg, .gif, .bmp, or something else) we have a starting place to work from. There are a number of programs that you can use to compress image files, with one or two probably already on your computer. Like Ron says, you might want to check the resolution controls on your scanning software. I scanned the two chips in the "My favorite chips" link below at 72 bps in a .bmp format, then converted the file to a .jpg format, and the image that you see when you click the link is about 19000 bytes. It makes a big difference in what the host site can contain, how much space it takes up on your hard drive and how long it takes for someone to see it!
