That's the way it's supposed to work. If you are high bidder and one bid-increment over bid number 2, your additional bids will not increment the high bid amount. If you are not one bid-increment over, your bid advances to second-high-bidder's bid plus one bid increment.
It's the price you pay for putting in a protective bid against yourself. You will never lose more than one bid increment in the process... a small price to pay, IMO
