In Response To: Favorite P.R. Dollar chips ()

Don,

You amaze me. You got the right answer. Why is the Sheraton $1 in Wreath chip my favorite. Lots of reasons. First, for a hot stamp chip, it is just the best looking chip I've ever seen. The greek small key mold always adds some class to a chip. Any how many deep red $1 chips do you ever see? Plus, it is in new condition. So all in all, a great chip.

And the place has some history. The Sheraton was one of the early resort casinos on the island. It opened in 1963 and closed for good in 1978 after being closed for in a couple of years from 1975 to 1977. The hotel casino reopened as the Dupont Plaza in 1978. On New Year's Eve, 1986, a fire at the hotel killed 97 guests and injured 147. The Dupont Plaza closed and was to reopen as The Palms Hotel. Chips were made but they never got the license. In 1991 the hotel reopened and is still the San Juan Marriott.

On my first visit to Puerto Rico in 1972, I was at the Sheraton but didn't gamble.

I have seen the overstamped chips, I found two different varities, "NO CASH VALUE" and "FREE PLAY". I send pix to Archie to put in his revised Puerto Rico Chip guide. And I have since, foolishly, traded them.

Thanks to George Davis about the history of Puerto Rico casinos.
