B.C.'s first destination casino opening soon

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- British Columbia's first destination casino is going to put the suburb of New Westminster on the tourism map when it opens next week, the operators say.

After a series of technical delays, gamblers will finally be able to set sail Wednesday aboard the Royal City Star, a five-year-old Mississippi riverboat.

Company spokesman Norman Stowe said the floating casino will be advertised on billboards along highways in Alberta, Washington and Oregon.

"Most people don't think of New Westminster as a tourism destination," Stowe said. "We're about to change all that."

The company expects the new casino to attract 1.5 million visitors to the Fraser River waterfront in the first year, and Stowe said the economic spin-offs for the city will be tremendous.

The casino, with a capacity for 1,000 gamblers, will be open 10 a.m. to 4 a.m., seven days a week and remain docked except for brief sailings twice daily.

Three of the 90-yard boat's five decks are dedicated to gambling. It has the maximum 300 slot machines and 30 gaming tables allowed under provincial regulations.

The vessel also has an 80-seat indoor restaurant, 80-seat patio and banquet hall for 200 guests.

New Westminster, which is also home to a community casino with 300 slots, expects to collect $5 million annually in gaming profits from the riverboat casino.

Under a revenue-sharing formula, one-sixth of the casino's profits will go to New Westminster, one-sixth will stay with its operators, and the remainder will go to the provincial government.

The city has bolstered police patrols to chase away drug dealers and prostitutes in anticipation of the influx of visitors.
