No expert but I had the same problem after installing a new "improved" (but bloated) version 6.0 on one of my computers. I uninstalled it and installed 5.0 of Adobe reader. It took some effort since the system and Adobe insisted that I had version 6.0 still installed.

Anyway, that's what happened in my case. The latest version would just load a blank screen and never display the files.

For the standard response... uninstall and re-install.

You can find the old version on the Adobe site with some searching.
