Speculation only ...
In Response To: Real basic question ()

... here, Rich. It seems unlikely that the letters would designate tables. The letter H would indicate at least 8 tables. I think it improbable that a cardroom in Chico at that time would have 8 tables devoted to some game which required chips of this type.

The only other use for such chips besides roulette which seems likely is as tournament chips for poker; but, I've never seen tournament chips without denominations and table designations. Maybe Andy or Gene would have more information about that. I don't personally know of any other game for which such chips would be appropriate.

I do not know the basis of Larry Eastman's attribution in his book. TGT, however, does list the club with "Mold: 8 suits" notation. I also checked the Jung-Pfaender CA chip guide and they don't list Fortune Cookie at all. [Apropos of absolutely nothing at all here, I keep wanting to type "Cookie's Fortune" when I write the name of this club!]

Does seem to be a bit of a conundrum. BUT, an illegal roulette game is not entirely out of the question. I think such things have been known to happen from time to time, even in CA! <g> ----- jim o\-S
