"Gene. Hey, how long have you been working in Las Vegas??"
Arrived January 1980.
Good Story about my 1st LV job.
I had a month to kill waiting for a poker job at the Holiday Center Strip. (poker mgr was an OLD timer from KY)) I told a good friend (another OLD timer from KY) find me something to do for a month or so. He called back the next day and said report to the Hotel Nevada, your a Black Jack dealer as long as you need to be. I said HUH???
I walked in and the boss said
"can you deal BJ?
I said
"I guess so, I can play it."
He says "push table 6."
5 minutes later I hear a yell,
"GET HIM OFF THAT TABLE."
He tells the pit boss,
"open table 8 as a dead spread."
He says to me,
" In case you didn't notice, that ain't no poker table! Table 8 is your table the rest of the day, practice and be ready by 9AM tomorrow."
I guess I was ready, I worked 22 days without further yelling and then reported to the Holiday.
BTW no offical pay check for the 22 days, just in on the toke split. Things were a lot different in those days. Not sure when the begining of the end of the old days started but the mid 80's was the end IMO.
I moved to the FQ's in early 1981.
My job description was deal 3 days on the clock, deal 1 day off the clock, play poker one day off the clock. Wallah 40 hours.
Never filled out an app to start any of the 3 jobs.
I moved to Shift manager late 1982, poker manager 84 or 85. HR called and said, we can't find your original app. I said geez thats strange. The college kids that was the start of the new (IMO better) LV didn't want to hear how things used to be,
