Again, I would never dispute anything that you are saying here, as you are the expert and I a mere student. However, I think that as hobbyists we should not have to accept the "legal" definition of obsolescence, as most of us have the concept tied to other factors, such as availablity, etc.
As an example, I consider the chip below to be obsolete, and you (and Gene and, of course, David) consider it to NOT be obsolete. I would wager that the majority of collectors would consider this to be an obsolete chip.
