I started out with an intent to sell them and got hooked on collecting them, now its selling them on eBay sometimes. As well as collecting them, some States are easy to get them, others like Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Delaware, District of Columbia and US Virgin Islands are rather hard to get, need connections.

You would be surprised what people collect (business cards, fruit stickers, phone cards).
