Re: Borland, Black and Jung
In Response To: Borland, Black and Jung ()

Boy, Mel, that post sure brings back some of MY memories!
I can't forget after buying the Blue Book, thinking that it would be neat to have an "original Flamingo Hotel" chip. So I sucked it up and sent an exorbitant amount of money to Borland (high in THOSE days; peanuts now!) for the chip he described that way in his book.
When I received it, I realized it could not possibly have been an "original" Flamingo chip, because it was one of the roulettes that pictured the hotel front, with the champagne tower in front. Now I knew that the hotel opened in 1946, but the champagne tower wasn't added until 1953.
I wrote to Borland to see if he'd sent me the wrong chip, pointed out the discrepancy, and never heard a word from him. I should have known better.
I'm afraid I'm not one of those who is - or was - a fan of Bill Borland's. He was a crook, so far as I'm concerned. Among other things, he counterfeited chips, then passed them off as genuine. To me, that's no hero.
