... the number of views appear right on the message subject line. You can quickly see the number of messages in a thread by setting the view on "compressed list". Took way longer to write my message to Michael Downey last night.

Of course, that was the reason I did the survey and posted the message!
>> Would you say that your stats refute that postion taken?
In part, particularly as seen by the number of responsive messages in the popular threads (posting in a thread requires more time and is, IMO, an expression of a higher degree of interest). The "views" numbers are probably more reflective of the "rubbernecking" to which you and David referred:
>> Or, is it a case similar to nobody likes to see people hurt in an automobile crash ...
>> but they all slow up to gawk at the scene to view the results when passing by?
In short, as I have said before, I think that what we are seeing is nothing more or less than that the group here is representative of the larger community, with similar interests, desires, prejudices, opinions, etc. And as long as Greg maintains the "public, no-holds-barred, uncensored" nature of the board, it's going to stay that way.
Which means that the "purists" are just going to have to learn to live with it, ignore it or limit their BB reading to the Club board. Not necessarily either a good thing or a bad thing, just a fact of ChipBoard life.
