Some places (Harvey's Lake Tahoe for example) play a kill pot whenever the previous pot exceeds a certain amount, like $50. That's also common in Omaha (the game, not the city).

And, some places play a half kill (4-8 becomes 6-12). Still others go from limit to pot or no limit when the kill is on.
