They are working on credit cards which will retain identity data in the chip. My c/card company tells me I will have to have a new machine (twice as big) capable of reading them.

The UK government asked for 10,000 volunteers to come forward for a joint credit card/identity card project about 2 months ago. I dont know what the response was.
