This sounds kind of odd to me. I would think putting items like lighters and matches in checked baggage would be preferable than having someone with a bunch of matches that can be used to start a fire on a plane. You are not allowed to smoke on board anymore so why do you need matches. ??????
The only thing I can think about is that your bags are put through a scanner at the airport. Or at least they are subject to it. If you have a large number of match books in there, is it possible that they could trigger a sensor or whatever that an explosive material may be in a suitcase. The suitcase would then be opened and they may need to remove the offending materials to prevent another triggering at another airport if your bag should have to be rescanned.
I am leaving on Saturday for 5 days so this is interesting to know. Will have to remember that as I usually do pick up matches as I go around town. Is there any problem then if a passenger has a large quantity of matches in their carry-on? I am not talking that many. Maybe 15 or 20 packs. What about going to the business center at the hotel and FedExing a package of some collectables home. Does FedEx have a problem shipping matches.
