In Rushdie's brilliant novel "The Satanic Verses" (which earned him a death sentence in Iran)he argued that an atheist and a believer are not opposites. They both claim to KNOW the nature of God. THey are both arrogant. They both think they'r esmarter than people who disagree with them.

The opposite of belief, argues Rushdie, is NOT disbelief. THey are opposite sides of the same coin. The opposite of belief is doubt.
