Coasters are placed under your drink to keep from damaging the bar, the coffee table, or other nicely finised surfaces. They catch the spills, and keep the moisture that condenses on the cold glass off the wood surface.

I never really thought about why they are called "coasters". Maybe they keep your drink glass from "coasting" off the slippery table when it gets wet??
