The only thing to trim was the cover, Norm. My book had fallen to pieces and most of the pages were loose. I carefully pulled apart those that were still attached in clumps. Heat seems to be the biggest cause of the binding failing in the first place; mine started to disintegrate after a few hours in the car in Las Vegas <g>. If you heat the thing up, it will soften the glue on the spine and make the removal of the remaining pages easier.
Kinkos will cut off the entire spine if you ask them to but you will lose some of the margin and probably some of the text when they punch the holes. Best to spend 10 minutes with a manual disassembly.
I hope the authors consider some kind of helical binding on the 2000 edition. Wire binding would have been even better for this small book in my opinion, but Kinko's doesn't have the equipment for this.
