...can be overturned or stifled by even one judge, in collusion with the current Governor (Gray Davis), as shown by the non-implementation of Prop. 187. Whatever you think of the merits of P. 187, the end-run on the part of Davis and the Democrats was slick (!) but disgraceful. There's even a recall petition, if you're interested, at:
Now, back to Prop.5 (the Indian gaming initiative), it's too bad the initiative wasn't better researched in the first place, because a revised prop. will surely pass if the original one passed by a 2 to 1 margin. Being cynical for a moment, what this does is put the issue "in play" again, which means the opportunity for all sides, and lots of politicians in between, to shake down the populace and the special interests for one more round of campaign contributions!
While I generally support the dwindling number of conservative politicians in Sacramento on most issues, I think former-Governor Pete Wilson mismanaged this particular issue over many years, to the long-term detriment of his party. A fair, negotiated compact, with some limits and controls, would have been better for all sides vs. the uncertainties we have at this point.
OK, now that's off my chest. Back to chipping.
