Shown below is a "Riviera Hotel" chip I picked up recently. It promotes a conference that was held there in 1988. Probably handed out at (or before) the conference for free. I like to collect "oddball" pieces like this, if at reasonable prices, to go with my bona fide Nevada casino chips.
Here's the question: How do you classify your "not really a casino chip" chips? Would you call this a "Riviera" chip or an "Advertising & Promotional" chip? [Note that it does not have a denomination, in contrast to the Sahara "Christmas Party 1968" chip.] And for TCR authors, where do you draw the line in including or excluding chips for listing in TCR? To give some examples, here's an incomplete list of "oddball" chips, according to TCR listing or not...
-------- INCLUDED IN TCR ---------
1. Sahara $1 Christmas Party 1968 chip
2. Fiesta free chips for 1998 and 1999 conventions [Thanks again, Gene]
3.Four Queens - UNLV/Univ Hawaii 1995 chip. No denom. Purchased at their gift shop. Not redeemable in the casino. (Was a promotional/fund-raising chip, I think.)
4. Leatherneck Club, US Marine Corp chip (oversize)
5. Various dealer's school chips
6. Palm Restaurant (Forum Shops) "2" and "5" lunch chips.
7. Mt. Charleston Resort - $5 parking chips
8. Tally Ho $5 chips (various dates)
9. Pink Pussy Cat (Reno) "good for" chips
10. Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer (2 promo/fund-raising chips)
11. Sports Card Connection chips
12. Chips from "never opened" casinos, such as Jockey Club and Shenandoah; also fantasy chips from "Winner's Circle"
----- NOT INCLUDED IN TCR -------
1. Riviera Hotel "High School Dirs of Athletics" chip (as shown in scan)
2. Planet Hollywood- LV (in Forum Shops) - 2 souv. chips from their gift shop.
3. Carlino's Fremont Coin - $5 set of 4 redeemable chips
4. Charlie's Lakeside Bar & Grill - "Free Drink" and "Free Meal" chips.
5. Crazy Horse Too (1997) $10 "good for" chip.
6. Desert Rose Motel $3 "Discount on Next Visit" chip.
7. Gaming Times Coll. Show - Oct. 10-11 1997 (Bob Karsten chip)
8. Little Church of the West
9. Harley Davidson Motorcycles of LV
10. Kentucky Fried Chicken
I think it's generally a good idea to put these chips in TCR, if for no other reason than to alert collectors that certain chips (i.e. "Winner's Circle") are not genuine casino chips. On the other hand, I can see drawing the line to exclude some advertising-only chips, such as the last few on the above list.
What's your opinion?
