I actually started my career as a CPA before becoming a programmer. My strategy is very similar to yours - no hobby generated income means a simpler return. A simpler return means less chance for an audit. No audit = WIN!

Besides, buying a couple of HR Friday the 13th chips off eBay pretty much assured I could cover any small amount of income I might generate.
