Re: Cleaning silver strikes ???
In Response To: Cleaning silver strikes ??? ()

Not sure on how to clean them and will keep up with this thread in case someone is kind enough to share the process. I have been picking them up in LV for about 8 years now and have noticed many of mine to darken with age. The silver stays nice but the brass rims darken quickly.

I have found one thing out that I can share right off. I learned fairly quickly to take the strikes out of the cases that they come in and put them into actual AirTites. The original holders have a little slot in them, I guess to open them more easilly. That slot will allow air and other contaminants inside that will darken and maybe damage the token. AirTites close tighter and will keep your Silver Strikes nicer longer.

I just had my Chip Collection out the other day while cleaning up some stuff. Ever watch TLC and shows like Clean Sweep or In A Fix??? Well without getting into embarassing details my collection was kind of burried under a lot of clutter. Anyways, While going through and consolidating all my loose new acquisitions with all the older chips and tokens and organizing everything I started to notice that even those tokens in the AirTites are starting to darken. Thus, I guess, there is no real solution that will halt the tarnishing and aging process. Again, the only thing that I know you can do is to carefully transfer the tokens from their original capsuls to the AirTite Capsuls. Remember though. The plastic holders can be a false sense of protection. They are great for protecting from scratches and finger prints but will still allow damage and wear, appearently from Air and Light.

I open the old capsul. Carefully not to touch the token. On a soft polishing cloth I dump the SS out onto the cloth. I then take the foam ring from the AirTite and carefully place it around the SS. Then put the bottom half of the AT onto the token and using the cloth, I guess, flip the token over. Place the top over and press firmly. You could also wear white gloves like you might find at a photo store in the darkroom section. Photographers use them to keep from getting fingerprints onto their film. Or use some other SOFT LINT FREE cloth when handling your tokens. Don't ever touch them with your bare hands.
