I can give you a quick run-down of the chip situation in Montana. You will only find live poker as a source of chips (no blackjack or other table games are allowed in the state) and these games are found mostly in the larger cities and towns. There are perhaps 25 active games going this time of the year in the state (yeah, it's a VERY big state with VERY few people!) The games are also often open only during the evenings or on the weekends, depending on the club. Best to call ahead anywhere you are traveling. I know of more than one "Montana Bar." Which town? Your suspicions are probably correct; most "casinos" in Montana only feature coin-less slots.
