Re: Internet On The Road Question

Hi Mark

I use SBC/Yahoo as my primary provider. They have local numbers in most places that I visit, and when a local number is not available, I subscribe to their premium service which allows me to connect via a 1-800 number @ 10¢/minute.

As Don mentioned, a lot of hotels are providing high speed internet access in their rooms. Some charge for using it, others don't (it's free at every Wingate in the country). When you are connecting this way, you are using their ISP. You will need a 10/100 LAN connection on your laptop. If you don't have one, you can buy a LAN PCMCIA card. As Don also mentioned, some hotels have wireless internet access. You'll need an 802.11b (or better) PCMCIA wireless card, or a computer with an Intel Centrino chip to pick up a wireless signal. I stayed in a hotel in Great Bend KS last summer that had free high speed wireless access in every room, and you'll find it available in many airports.
