At Christmas in 1963 we gave my wife's father a beautiful set of cuff links; black stone--neat design. I coveted them. Sadly, he passed away shortly thereafter and my mother-in-law gave me the links which I cherished. Then on the long long way to court, I stopped at a little motel for the night; following morning dressed for court; but when I got there I had but one cuff link. I struggled through the arguments and drove off in the afternoon stopping at the motel to see if they had found it; and there it was in the driveway where it had dropped; damaged but repairable. The same thing happened to me years later with a set of ceramic buttons; returning from a party I found I had lost one; there it was in the driveway. I agree always first look in the driveway.
