If there was a way to drive to Michigan, that was longer, but avoided Chicago, I'd take it! Unfortunatly the world passes through Chicago to/from the North, if you want to go to Indiana, Ohio or Michigan. (and points East)
My solution in recent years is leave Milwaukee around Midnight, so I go through Chicago at 2 am.
Aside from the drunks, people driving with no headlights and crazies who insist on exiting to right hand ramps from the left lane... it's much more peaceful.
I get to see the Sunrise while I'm cruising along with the Highway to myself, in Michigan. Paying for the Skyway is a pleasure.
