I have noticed the same. It appears to be a holder behind the desk to the viewers left (when watching oval office addresses). The only other thing I could imagine it to be is campaign buttons. There is a White House web site with panaramic views controled by the viewer...I will try and verify exactly what he has there...will also email them with an inquiry.
