Rick,
What hit that cruise ship is a common illness spread by any manner, including breathing on other people, or being spread through the the ventilation system of a closed quarters vessel like a plane or a boat. It is commonly referred to as stomach flu or 24-hour flu, and even if you dipped the entire ship in disinfectant, chips included, it wouldn't prevent the same thing from happening on the next cruise if one or two passengers is sick or in the contagious phase of incubation. That's why I always close the overhead air nozzles when I fly. The viruses don't live long when not in a medium that is liquid or living. If you are worried about chip goop, set the chips in front of a fan.
