I would have bit on that one. Probably that one had a lower power supply voltage and the new one is higher, or... maybe that's why your old one was broken. (as in it wasn't the PS was?)

Anyway I didn't want to say anything, but it looked like you had set the thing to scan a tranparency not an image, so that's why it was locking in on the slide carrier.

When I first used a scanner I kept getting nothing but little black boxes, until I realized I had to move the box around what I wanted. New (free used) scanner finds the image, so computer dummies don't have to figure things out.
