I agree with you $6 for a current $1 chip seems a bit over the top. But people sell lots of things every day that seem way overpriced to me. Just go in a designer clothing store And of course look at it the opposite way. If a seller had a chip that was way underpriced, say a chip worth $1000 at a garage sale priced at $10, how many club members would advise them of its true value? Almost all would just quietly pay the $10 and we'd all admire their "nice find."
