I believe the auction item you referred to was Lot #53 ... a repaired Circus Circus $100 chip that was Bruce Landau's. If I recall the story correctly, it was a broken chip that had been glued by David Sarles years ago and David had brought to the Auctioneer's attention that it had been repaired and the reserve was lowered from $2,500 to $1,500. The auction audience was advised of the repair and the chip still sold at the lower revised estimate.
